Night Noodle Markets 2016

Finally doing a real time blog post, mainly because the Night Noodle Markets are ending this coming Sunday.

October is Good Food Month, and I usually go to a dessert place with my fellow Good Food Month friends every year 201520142013. However this year, it was the worst choice of #sugarrush restaurants, with mostly chocolate and nut desserts on offer. Nothing was really appealing, and quite expensive. So we decided to ditch the desserts and just have desserts at the Night Noodle Markets.

The line up was generally the same, some new and some people who didn't come this year. Set up same as usual. Just get there early to secure yourself a table, since lines are quite long even at 6.30, then peaks at around 7, but finally dies a tad bit at 8.30. As always, everything is more expensive, smaller and not as good quality here compared to getting it to the actual restaurant)

It's the first year where it's card payment only, which is good I guess since you just tap, and no need to deal with change, get out your whole wallet whilst holding a ton of food, and just speeds up the line/payment process. It feels prices may have gone up due to card payments...However, if you lose your card, then gg. Friends found a credit card lying on the floor, and chucked it into the bin-since the security/bag checkers won't know what to do with it, and better to chuck the card than someone scam away on your card the whole night before you realise you lost it and it may have been too late to call up and cancel your card.

reminds me of Vivd (not that I went this year..)

Hoy Pinoy

A filipino style store, known for there skewers which you can smell and see the smoke from the other side of the street. I come here every year but walk past it. This time I just decided to get it, since might not have the chance or time next yr. Super overpriced skewers if you compare it to supermarkets, and the skewer is big but not a lot of meat either....It's just fun to hold a skewer haha.

Inihaw na Baboy: pork belly skewers with banana ketchup glaze-2 for $12

Messina

Too bad you can't mix and match or just get 1 skewer, so ended up getting 2 pork, which apparently is the more popular option over the chicken. The skewer is super long, but there's actually not that much meat. The glaze was a sweeter version of a tomato sauce and less 'sticky, but would have liked more glaze on it. Some parts of the pork was quite fatty, but when you're walking around and trying to make sure no one bumps into your overpriced skewers, it's hard to get bite away the fat...

Only On Sundaes: salted coconut sorbet, black sticky rice, lychee tapioca, caramelised puff pastry, lemon grass & white choc ganache-$12

Shared this with a friend, and I think this dessert is relatively value for money compared with other stuff in terms of quantity, quality and price. It was super filling even after sharing it. The sorbet wasn't really icy, and more smooth which I prefer. The salt wa more on the subtle side which is good in this case, since there are a few other flavours here. The lychee flavour was more sweet than lychee, but tapiocas are always fun to eat. Caramelised puff pastry was crisp but wasn't really needed. The lemongrass and white choc ganache was a tad bit grainy, maybe they put it on the stove or stirred it for too long...The black sticky rice was the really filling part. By itself it had a really plain flavour, so just try ti save some sorbet when you are finishing this off.

Matcha Do About Nothing: Milk chocolate and matcha gelato, white chocolate and pistachio crunch with a green tea waffle cone-$10

Tried a bit of this, and enjoyed the matcha flavour gelato inside, relatively good hit of matcha. The choc top was too sweet with the white choc. The cone was lined with choc, so couldn't really taste the green tea flavour in it.

Harajuku Gyoza

Octo Dog-$9

Bought this because it was so cute I couldn't resist! Look at those eyes haha. Didn't even know what it is until I bit into it. It's pretty much a frankfurt deep-fried in some Japanese style batter, which is slightly sweet. Wasn't too heavy or oily, and quite delicious.

Was thinking of trying the raindrop cake, since this restaurant is based in Potts Point which I never pass, but my friend may attempt it in the holidays, so passed on it since it's pretty overpriced for some agar and water. How much does agar even cost? Even if you but one small packet, pretty sure you can make a lot more than just one tiny portion...

Also wanted to try One Tea Lounge, but couldn't bring myself to buy 3 small sliders for $23 and was quite full. They actually do have the full size Matcha Baoger last week at the restaurant for $18 ($14 for fatties) which I missed...Also could've won a chance to win $50/$25 if you took a pic of something from them, but didn't end up getting anything from there...

Probably won't have time to come again to try more food...Finals just 2.5 weeks away. Did not study tonight, but life is too short without some good food (:

Bavarian Bier Cafe

Being adventurous and going to new places, especially when you're catching up with people you haven't seen in a while is the best! There is a nearby carpark behind the restaurant, but it's metered and coins only-no change given. Found out afterwards you could use card...so I wasted 50c...

The restaurant is inside a renovated church building, which is pretty cool since it still retained the high ceilings and stained glass windows. Gives a rustic sort of feel. They have booth seating on the side, and banquet style seating in the middle. There were actually quite a few tables there on a Tuesday night.

stained glass windows

Tried to order a bit of everything (plus extra) so we had enough to go around the group. Lighting wasn't the best for photos, and everyone was hungry, so some not fully in focus...

Crackling pork belly, braised red cabbage, roasted potatoes onion bier jus, granny smith apple compote-$29

The pork belly is a little bit hard to cut into with just a normal knife, but once you bite into it, it gave a good crunch. Not completely melt-in-your-mouth crackling, but still pretty decent. Potatoes cooked well and heaps of veggies under as well. The apple compote was really delicious. Good apple flavour with a bit of tartness, worked well with the pork.

Über-schnitzel: Pan-Fried Crumbed Chicken, baby rocket, semi-dried tomato, parmesan-$27

Was executive the schnitzel to be a bit bigger, but it had a lovely crumb without the chicken drying out. The semi-dried tomato was just the ketchup like sauce, and it did taste a lot better with it. It was served with mash which was nice and buttery.

creamy mash plus tomato sauce for schnitzel

Bavarian Tasting: Crispy Pork Belly, Haus-Sausages, Schnitzel, Sauerkraut, Red Cabbage,  Creamy Mash, Granny Smith Apple Compote, Bier Jus -$32

Wasn't really sure which sausages we got, or taste a massive difference, but they were relatively lean and well seasoned. The bier jus is kind of like gravy but not as salty.

Pulled pork pretzel roll, cabbage slaw, sweet BBQ sauce, fries-$15

This roll (bun) was super soft, and still maintained it's composure after splitting into 5 nice cake-like slices (thanks to density friend). Pork was soft and flavourful. Chip were average, but love the cute fryer.

Crispy Mac n Cheese Balls-Blue Cheese Mayo, Smoked Bacon-$10

Ordered this since it sounded interesting. Tasted pretty good as well, crisp outside and cheesy inside. Only had about one piece of macaroni in it, and not much bacon, but the cheese itself was melting and delicious.

Haus-made black forest cake w/ Kirsch-Cherries, dark Chocolate-$11

Quite a lot of cream rather than sponge in this cake. You can definitely taste the sourness and alcohol from the liquor they used, and this cake wasn't only slightly sweet. Interesting difference compared to normal black forest cake which is sweet (like all cakes).

Haus-made apple strudel w/ Vanilla Sauce and Whipped Cream-$10+$2

The pastry was soft and since it was served warm, it was a delight to eat (even if it was a spoonful). The waiter asked us if we wanted ice cream, but didn't tell use there was a surcharge to it, and it didn't say the price on the small dessert menu that we got. Not really worth $2 for one scoop, but at least they scooped it nicely. Couldn't really taste the vanilla in the vanilla sauce since it got mixed in with the cream. Apart from that, the service was good.

yay for packages

argh i hate stats. all these tute hw tasks plus lecture hw tasks plus task which we can only do on uni computers all due at end of stuvac. plus the assignment which was supposed to be due end of this week was pushed back to end of next week. all my study time gone! D= why do people ask for an extension when it just cuts into their study?

blueberry ice cream oreo

finally opened the packet yday. overseas has so many interesting flavours. this is the limited edition "prime berry", it's not as good as the purple blueberry ice cream oreo. this one tastes more berry but less ice creamy.

receipe to riches from last night-$8

took a photo because it's not cheap

i've had a fair share of gourmet sausages in the past, from kangaroo to linseed, to super, duper lean beef $20+kg. this one was on tv last night, and it's pork, apple and cinnamon made with pork intestine as the skin. first time buying something from it, didn't get anything from last series. this is around $18 a kg. on tv, there servings looked really big, but irl, each individual one is quite small. the texture is a bit different, not as chewy and firm as others, idk it's hard to describe. you could definitely smell the cinnamon, but the taste was quite subtle. it was a bit above average, but probs wouldn't spend money on it if it did win...you know that Chocorn from last series? last year it was selling for around $8 a pack, now they're $4ish.

oh, neil perry's burger project is opening on friday at world square. something that i can kind of afford from neil perry...rockpool and rock pool bar and grill has been on my list for quite a while now

the whole pantry book!

yay it came today! had an awkward moment of "how do i open this package." quick background knowledge, belle was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer at the age of 20 (which is quite scary since that's out age), but she survived that and is now 25 and has a son. she's still not cancer free and has many other cancers, but it's very inspirational seeing the way she lives through it. like she gives organic toothpaste to her son, which is kind of like grub and nothing like the typical white toothpaste...TWP app was app of the year last year in the food and fitness section. quite a lot of recipes are quite simple, and it's amazing at how you can make healthy sticky date pudding, pannacotta, pasta, the list goes on. it's so smart! mainly using a lot of coconut oil/cream/water, which i'm not supposed to have....there's so much knowledge about things as well, and what staples are best, and what suits different people. also heaps of other unusual recipes like natural washing powder and air fragrance. i don't normally buy books let alone recipe books, but this was $21 well spent. couldn't put it down this arvo, even though i should be studying...can't wait to try it out next feb. yes, that's when i'll actually be at home for the majority of the break for about 2 weeks...

the stress has hit me after a not super productive day today. stats stuff taking way too long to complete, and it's not even worth much...

last practice with anaesthetics tomorrow before a 3 week period without practice D= how do they expect us to ace it, when we've only practiced it only two times before it? don't have access to those stuff at my work place, unlike some other friends =/

Stock Market

probably the most unproductive night so far. stuff due next week which i have yet to start. i will be productive on the weekend! there, i said it, so i shall be more obliged to do it (if that makes sense, haha). i already had an unproductive arvo since i went window shopping (for a purpose), and then the bus started to break down once it got to where i live since it has heaps of hills, and it would go up the hill slower than walking pace....so glad there was a bus behind, so we just got onto that.

rainy day earlier this week on a double decker

stock market medium salad: mixed leaf with egg, pumpkin, capsicum, cucumber, celery, tomato, avocado and honey mustard dressing+piece of bread-$8.40

first time having stock market, even though it's "the" salad bar of the whole campus and best place to have lunch. tbh, i think it's a bit over rated. i bought a medium and it was pretty heavy, and filling (well i actually had a free sausage before, but it was gourmet at $18/kg compared with cheap <$5/kg woolies sausages). i thought the person gave me enough sauce, but not really, whilst Better's was drenched. i guess salad is healthy, until it comes to the dressing....first time having a hard boiled egg in a long time. got avocado for 50c extra, but it wasn't fully ripe yet =/ would've preferred it to be more soft. salad is filling, but i guess you can have it at home...wished there was croutons though...it's actually quite stressful picking out ingredients quickly since there is heaps to choose from. so nice seeing Better at uni (: usually i study in my breaks, but i knew today wasn't going to be productive...

zumbo's eastern collection is amazing. i think i'll go "broke" buying every single easter collection.

there's now an update for iOS 7.1. nts: future car should be a model which incorporates CarPlay

19. Birthday Free Food Haul (Elisa's Guide to Free Birthday Food)

19. i can't believe it's been a year already! today's date somewhat has a pattern (: i don't like the number 19. it's prime and ugly, 17 sounds and looks better, but 19 is =/ doesn't feel like it's my birthday. from primary to high school, i used to be like, guess what!? it's my birthday in two weeks! and then remind people. now i think i'm at the stage where i'm like meh, not as excited as i used to be/don't want people to know how old i am. i bet my face can still pass as a 14yo.

it's mostly because i didn't have a party that it felt like it was my birthday. it kind of feels good not organising any parties, although i would love one, i don't have the moneys. i have to pay for some of my 21st if i have one. then again, i would rather not have any parties and save it all for my wedding. yes, i'd rather go all out on my wedding than have a few parties here and there.

before uni, there wasn't a lot of chances to go to the city, but since uni started, i go city everyday. i figured this year is the year to go after free food, since next year uni will be super busy (more on this later). such nice sunny weather today (: i've always loved august (totes no bias here lol) since it starts to get warm, not a lot of rain, and not too hot (:

Lowenbrau Keller

first time having a proper German meal. originally we were only going to share a free meal, but that seemed to cheap, so we got two plates. everyone ordered a massive pork knuckle (signature dish), but the crumbed skin of the pork knuckle would make my face even worse...lol.

this place is a must to go on your birthday! just make sure you book. the restaurant is massive inside. you can choose any single plate on the menu.

top: lunch special of haus-made sausage, mash potato, some special onion with some sauce-$14.50. bottom: Original Zwiebelrostbraten, Char-Grilled 300g Sirloin Steak with Cheese Spätzle, Apple Onion Confit & Red Wine Glaze

being asian, i tried to maximise my free meal, so i got the steak. it's $35 (on the website it says $38). i asked for medium, but the sides were a bit chewy. the apple things on top was quite interesting, so was the floury things. it reminded me of gnocchi, but more flavourless, so you needed to have some sauce with it. this flour was a bit dense-ish, but it was nice in its own way. i didn't actually hear the proper name for the lunch special, but for 14.50, that wasn't too bad. the sausage was sooo good! meaty, not overly flavoured, didn't feel like there was a skin on it, big, no fattening/oily feeling. no wonder why during aroma festival, hordes of people lined up to get a super duper long hot dog for $10. the mash here was pretty nice, onions had this sourness to it, and the sauce was good. i've had a lot of sausages from various butchers before (still have yet to go snag and stand), but this one is one of the best!

coffee was 3.50 and was decent (i had a chai for 3.50 at uni earlier, and it hardly had any spices and the cinnamon was just spooned on top of the milk-disappointed). btw, hot water here cost $1.50 (also at uni in that cafe i went to, hot water was 1.00. ridiculous).

walked past the Masterchef pop-up restaurant. literally pop up as it was a tent/marquee. probs heaps fancy inside. kinda like our exam centres, where it's actually nice inside. the place around the site smelt of fertiliser/sewage, i walked past at around 4-ish, and today is the opening night, so no idea how they would get rid of the smell on time. their bar wasn't opened yet, so couldn't see what the bar menu was ): no time to trek to the rocks again.

walked to darling harbour since free shuttle bus ended at 3.30. i guess that makes sense since if i was a paying customer, i would be so angry at those free shuttle buses causing even more congestion during school zone/peak hour. anyways, we were super full, so a good half hour walk was pretty good.

San Churros

person was nice and said she didn't have to check ID. she didn't even look at my voucher properly. i made two emails, so got two vouchers, so i could have gone the day before/after my bday.

churros for two: 6 churros w/ dark and milk chocolate dipping sauce-$15
dark was soo much better than milk. looking at other tables, most people finished more of their dark than milk. the dark choc had a more intense/not as sweet flavour, and a richer smell.

was looking forward to this since i've never had them before. tbh, they weren't that great. the centre of the churro was still a bit doughy, yet at the same time, the whole churro itself didn't have enough dough and was skinny. it didn't have the lightness of what a churro should be. maybe it's because it was free so they didn't cook it properly...MOVIE WORLD CHURROS ARE THE BEST! no jokes.

Baskin Robbins

now this was a "waste of stomach space". you see. by now i'm quite full and full of sugar, but i signed up to the club. i've never seen a non-asian run baskin robbins before (if you do, please tell me). that asian lady didn't even care about customers. what if we were paying customers? would you still continue to look at your phone and ignore people who want to be served? sooooo stingy these people, even more than towers. when i tried the red velvet, the man only gave me a tiny bit ie a speck of rice. how do i frikken taste it? all i tasted was plastic. then i showed my voucher and id to the woman. she fully stared at the voucher and my licence, sructinising every single detail up close. literally. she put the paper close to her eyes, then scratched her head (which is super unhygenic, esp when you're serving food WITHOUT gloves). i felt like she memorised everything on my licence. after about a full 5min, she says "you can only choose the flavours was the spoon" ie the crap flavours. i didn't want anything chocolate/caramel after the churros.

Candy Stripes.

i got candy stripes which was orange and white choc mousse. sooo flavourless. it was served in the smallest, cheapest soft serve cone, even maccas cones are better. the scoop of ice cream was the smallest scoop of ice cream ever! seriously, not worth your time going to the Harbourside one. such stingy people. and they were the only people who didn't say "Happy birthday". every other place said it at least once. their attitude is horrible. never ever going to this one again. no idea what this is worth, i think it's worthless because even for kids cones, they don't serve ice cream in it, only soft serve ice cream. i didn't bother to argue with them to get a waffle cone, after the first contact i made with them for the tasting, i just wanted to leave baskin robbins.

Boost

my all time favourite place to go! i love boost. just join their vibe club. boost has really good members discounts time to time, and you really do feel good after drinking it!
Skinny Dip-$6.40 (or 6.90, there was only a sign of this flavour, but no actual price). it had apple juice, strawberry sorbet, yogurt, raspberry, banana, and probably heaps of other stuff.

the guy was so nice, he's like "don't worry, you'll definitely get an original". the one in harbourside opened recently, and so far, they're the only store to still other 3 sizes, other places only have medium and original. he was also very generous with the sorbet, i counted 4 scoops. normally i think it's 2/3. so refreshing and a ncie way to finish all that food. (i actually didn't finish the boost, splitted it with my mum). not enough time to see if i could get a free boost at other stores, but i don't think i can since their card is electronic.

Nando's

never have a bought Nando's full price. what's good about this is that you can get a member club without purchasing anything (unlike sumo salad). got takeaway since it was getting late/i needed to go dance. they let you have a "birthday meal"-how generous of them! you can choose any regular item, any side and and drink. too much choice!

lemon and herb half chicken, peri peri chips and tropical juice-$17.45

i think this chicken wasn't as freshly grilled compared to my last experience. they probably half cooked it, then grilled it more to make it warm when someone ordered it, since we only waited 5min, and last time at towers it was a 10-15min wait (according to my mum). i guess it makes sense since you need to serve heaps of people quickly in the city. chicken was quite burnt on the other side. the peri peri chips actually weren't spicy (maybe they didn't put enough spice in it).

Subway

got this the day before since i knew i would be too full today.
6-inch steak and cheese sub ($7.20) and coke (no idea how much bottled coke costs these days).

the unsw doens't participate in these deals/offers, so i had to walk outside. this wasn't toasted/warm enough and i think this 6-inch was more like 5 inch. oh wells, free lunch, can't complain. also, my bro came home with a $5 meatball subway w/ drink. it was supposed to be 6-inches, but the guy misheard, and gave him a footlong but he let my bro still pay $5.

birthday cake from zest patisserie-tiramisu.

this was a mousse and sponge cake, with super cute chocolate coffee mousse cups on top. it's not made on site, it's made in the other franchise in rozelle, but they deliver cakes to cherrybrook at around 6am in the morning. i've had over 10 cakes from here, so i've basically tried everything i've wanted. this tiramisu cake was good, except it wasn't as nice as the other cake there. i think the sponge may have been soaked in too much liquer, and i don't think our fridge is cold enough since the mousse isn't firm enough. this was a medium sized cake (didn't need a big one unlike pervious years), and i couldn't fit all 19 candles without all the candle conjoining together, BUT I LOVE MY CANDLES, so we lit 13, then blew them, then lit 6, then blew them. #firstworldproblems.

all in all, over $80 worth of free food. probably will do some place again next year, but other places are a no-go. i had at least 2 other places to go to, but not enough time.

my present of food has been satisfied. didn't have a proper birthday dinner since i was sooo full. what i really want for my birthday is one of those "money can't buy" things. ...

thank you Dandelion for the cake. it was good, and it survived in one piece after i walked around for the whole day!  as always, it's the thought that counts (:
