Mas.Que

Made the trek to St Leonards for brunch since I saw the waygu dish. It's a masquerade themed cafe with different masquerades inside. They did open the windows so occasionally there were some flies trying to get near the food. Each table had different animal shaped salt and pepper shakers which I thought was pretty cute. On the day I think we had a new waiter since she wasn't sure what the popular dishes were and had to call the main guy over to our table.

The magical: natural colour drink with homage flavour and lemonade-$8

love the colours

after stirring

The ice in the middle is some flavoured thing so that when it melts, it deepens the colour. The person told us to slowly poor the extra blue coloured tea in it, and some acidity change causes the colour change and you see the different colour levels turn into a gradient. This drink reminded me of Ribena/blackcurrant, but with some bubbles from the lemonade.

Fig Prawn Tartare Crossaint-$22

Love how the croissant is just spilling with filling and a decent amount of fig. It is pretty expensive for a croissant, and I found there was way too much sauce for the pastry, but I liked the freshness of the flavours, and the tartare wasn't too heavy, just only a lot of it. They use Luxe croissant and it was nice and flaky and buttery.

Sparkling bubble pop: angry green apple with lychee bubble pop-$8

Super cute emoji bag. It wasn't too sweet since the bubbles helped to cut back on the sweetness. The lychee pops all sank to the bottom of the bag, but it was fun to eat and drink.

Wagyu Tataki & Soba-$25

#yolkporn

They used wagyu sirloin M6+, and super thinly sliced. It was pan seared, but this dish wasn't a hot dish. Beef was well seasoned and could taste the quality, and the homemade soba sauce gave nice flavour to the soba without being too salty. Love how to egg yolk just dripped down from a height.

Bouche on Bridge

Being a (poor) uni student, decided to make the most of the Vivid set menu and a voucher I got earlier this year from Taste of Sydney. I really loved their wallaby skewers and soft serve from the festival, so was looking forward to dining here, even though their menu has changed for winter. They have a special set menu, 3 courses for $55, or 2 for $45, so it was perfect timing to go. My voucher was for 20% off a la carte menu, but the waiter thought I wanted 20% off the set menu. Pls, I know I can only get one discount or the other, and I even called up beforehand. She was pretty harsh and I'm just like get the manager (this was even before we ordered anything). The she realised afterwards she misunderstood the whole discount thing...It took a long time before they brought out the menus, no idea why when were were only the 3rd table there. I'll just list the normal prices below.

I always take photos of bread (at restaurants which give complimentary bread). The butter was so, so smooth and easy to spread on. The bread crust wasn’t too hard and still had a slight crunch.

1. Entree: Cured Petuna ocean trout, pickled cucumber & smoked roe-$20

Ocean trout was super fresh, and loved the pickled cucumber balls. I’m not normally a fan of creme freche, but this one was quite light (hidden under the trout) and gave the fish more flavour to help tie everything together. The bits of dills and other herbs also helped to makes this entree light. The salmon roe helped to season the fish without being overly salty and could still taste the curing in it.

pink duck and beetroot!

Main: Muscovy duck breast, smoked beetroot & radicchio-$38

Duck is my favourite protein, and I was delighted to see the nice and pink pieces of duck breast meat. I’ve seen at other places for the same price, you get less duck. Some may find this too pink, but for me it’s perfect (unlike that time it was way too pink at Sepia and ended on bleeding on the plate…then that’s not ok). It was soft and could definitely test ether quality of the produce. They didn’t say crispy skin, but I assumed it would. It did have a slight crispiness by the time I finished taking photos. The fat was rendered perfectly, but a skinny duck helps since not much fat to begin with. I actually hate beetroot esp the canned slices, but the smokiness from the beetroot helped to reduce the overpowering beetroot flavour, and the bitterness from the radicchio gave this dish a nice earthy tone. The sauce ended up melting the puree blobs of beetroot, so I you wore white like me, just be careful eating this dish. If only they gave a sharper knife to cut through the meat and leafy veggies…

pink!

2. Rangers Valley Black Onyx beef, confit mushroom & sauce bordelaise – bavette – 180 gr-$38

The beef was cooked perfectly pink and super tender. We found that with the bourdalaise sauce plus salt on top it was a bit too salty. It’s small for the price, but again quality > quantity. Wasn't sure if it was actually 180g. Again, places like this I wished they gave a whole mushroom rather than half, but it was super juicy and flavourful.

look at that puff!

struggles of melting ice cream and hot pastry

Spiced Sheperton quince tarte tatin-$22

The tarte tatin is one of their signature dishes. Last season it was in the entree with a cheese entree which I hoped to try, but now it’s in the form of a dessert. This was worth he 20min wait. The pastry was nice and flaky without being too overly buttery. The spiced quince was firm on the outside yet still soft on the inside with a nice fruity and slightly acidic flavour. Loved the super fragrant ice cream which melted on the fresh out of the oven tatin (vanilla flavoured? couldn’t see any vanilla beans but tasted like vanilla though).

3. Dessert: Werribee chestnut cream, dark chocolate & caramel sheets-$19

The chestnut and cream was a bit boring, and in photos it looked like the dessert from Quay with different texture sticking into a nougat. I guess it’s because of the ‘cheaper’ menu that less effort was put into the presentation. Layering something is easier than sticking things in and hoping they balance on top. The cacao wafer was super thing and crunchy, and the chocolate was perfectly tempered. Would have liked more of the chestnut flavour in the cream, but it wasn’t too creamy which was also good (if that makes sense…lol)

Capp-coffee comes with set menu

The restaurant didn’t get busy until later in the evening, probably because people finished looking at Vivid stuff. They forgot about the capp we ordered until much later when the bill arrived.  It took them over 10mins to get this out to us. It's a decent size and a nice coffee aroma with a good amount of frothed milk. It's probably a large size compared to other cafes. They didn't offer this to you and it doesn't say it on the printed out menu on that night, but the website menu had it, and of course I didn't want to be 'ripped off' from a coffee (yes, food lyf of a uni student who dreams of eating at places for free, but it's too hard following the game and getting more 'followers.') 😔 Vivid ends this Saturday, so if anyone reading this late post and wants to go out for a spontaneous dinner like me, I suggest you should try this whilst they have the Vivid set menus.

Bourke St Bakery

Rhubarb danish-$4

Decided on this since I saw them take it out fresh from the oven. Lovely flaky, buttery pastry balanced with a nice sourness from the rhubarb. If only they gave even more rhubarb...

Black Star Pastry

Sometime I think we take tables and chairs for granted. For those who haven't been, the original Newton store had stools for tables and chairs. Here in Rosebury there's about a million times the space, with ample seating and not crowded. Parking this side of town is a bit better as well.

Shirley Quiche: mushrooms and herbs

I was in the area to pick up a Messina cake, and decided to try go Black Star down the street in Rosebury. There is so much space in here and not just 5 or so chairs like in Newtown. So spacious and kind of an industrial decor feel inside. The egg was quite fluffy inside, not too dense with super thin and flaky pastry. Parts of it was too salty, but loved the super flavourful herbs and juicy mushrooms. It took me forever to decide which quiche to try. There were so many savoury options for lunch as well as heaps of salads. Maybe I should make another detour here for other lunch options.

---

Well what do you know, was in the area and we decided to drop here for lunch. There's new pies like kangaroo, mussels, and of course the lamb, my very first Black Star savoury item, which still remains one of my favourite pies. Yes, and I did end up getting salad.

Salad of the Day (large)-$8.50, Kangaroo pie-$9

Salad was delicious, not too overly dressed or oily. Loved the addition of the currents, but would have liked some crunch, and a tad bit more creaminess from the goats cheese. Decent serving size and loved the freshness.

inside

Kangaroo pie caught my eye because, well, it's kangaroo. This one actually tasted quite authentic, just like how kangaroo tastes like, similar to kangaroo sausages, but since it's mince here, a lot softer compared to actual, lean, red meat kangaroo. It's an acquired taste and my friend didn't like it. Pie is a bit smaller than my last pie a year or two ago from Newtown Black Star. Pastry could be more flaky and buttery (even though that's unhealthy), but it was still super thin at the bottom, and easy to cut into.

Doux Amour

Cutest chox pastry ever! Despite the increased prices, when we went 1.5hrs after opening, 2 flavours already sold out. By the time we left half an hour later, they sold out for the day, so be sure to get in quick! Next time we know to pre-order, so we can get all the flavours in one go. Choux pastry isn't a new concept, but when you match flavours with super cute animal designs, it turns into a new craze.

sooo cute!

The choux is quite thin, airy and light, and perfectly baked. They're not really that sweet, and all filled with a light flavoured cream. It's a lot smaller in real life and cost $7.40 each (not $5.50 which was the price the last time I checked). I guess you pay for the time to make them, and the really creative designs. Still worth my money.

Octopus-taro

Taro flavour was there, would have liked a bit more though. The fondant is kinda cute for the 8 legs.

Frog-green tea

I think this flavour was the subtlest, and I like my green tea flavoured stuff strong, so thought this was lacking in flavour.

bear-Nutella

Didn't try this one, but according to my friend, it was a perfect hint and balance of Nutella, without being too sweet or overpowering.

Penguin-black sesame

Who doesn't love an additional macaron shell? The fondant for the face makes it cute, but if you have it by yourself, it will dominate the whole dessert with sugar. This black sesame cream was my favourite though as you do get the hit of black sesame.

almost sold out when we got there...

I do recommend to come try this out, but make sure to get in early! Hope to try the rose and lychee pig and chai tiger next time.
