Sedap

Always walk past here going to Aqua S/Chanoma (now known as O Matcha), but never actually went here until now. It does feel like Malaysia with shared tables, stools, and super crowded inside. It has some hawker decor but cleaner than actual hawker stalls in Malaysia where when I went, was scared of getting food poisoning lol.

food spread

Nasi Lemak beef rendang-$14

I managed to have the beef so wasn't too overly spicy. I'm not an expert in Malay food, but beef was full of flavour and not just chilli, and decent chunk of meat.

Char Keoy Teow-$14

I found this had more beef and other ingredients than actual noodle like Chinese sausage which is normally expensive. It did make the dish quite salty so luckily we shared it. It was more on the oily side, but I guess with 'hawker style' street food, noodles are oily. It feels bigger than it looks.

Roti canai-$5.50

Roti was so fluffy and they have a decent serving of it.

Lime Lychee-$6 and Teh Tarik-$3.50

The lime lychee drink was sweet, but there was some sort of lime juice to make it not overly sweet like canned lychee, The teh tarik could've had a stronger tea flavour, but still a nice drink and relief from the saltiness and chilliness of the food.

Lazy Suzie

After seeing this dessert on Instagram, I finally had the time to trek here for the dessert. It's actually a quick walk from Hyde park, so not too far away from the CBD.

cool circle lighting decor

afternoon

We came at around 3.30pm and were told there was only the bar/snack food available which was perfectly fine since we were there for the desserts. The savouries menu is quite over priced if you compare it to Malay street food, but I guess it's presented differently and a modern take on it (well from what I've heard).

ABC: shaved blue pea flower ice, bubur chacham, taro ice-cream-$14

Coming here for this, so more than one photo needed to be taken. It is expensive for the side and for ice which overseas is super duper cheap. From what I heard I was expecting a super tiny dessert, mainly a bowl size slightly bigger than an ice cream scoop. It was small irl, but not as small as I was expecting. The taro flavour was lovely in the ice cream, and not the sweet taro flavour in other ice creams/frozen yogurts. Loved the intensity of the colour as well. The shaved ice was soft yet super cold. Was hoping for more of the other jellies to be in it, since there weren't enough of each type. The flavour of the syrup gave it the right amount of sweetness.

Banana fritter: roasted coconut ice cream, salted caramel-$14

This semlt so good when it came to the table, and we were all pleasantly surprised that a banana fritter could be so delicious. The coconut ice cream is one of the smoothest ice creams I've ever had, and super fragrant and not overly sweet. It did melt quickly, but I guess that's due to the warm sauce and hot deep fried stuff next to it. The banana was deep fried perfectly with super crunchy and not overly floury batter. I normally don't like floury battered stuff, but would be happy to eat the remaining bits of batter pieces for this. Banana inside was soft and not mushy, and everything tied well with the salted caramel with a good consistency.

PappaRich and Messina Take 2

Lovely catch up with some high school friends. What a coincidence, same break last year, we also went here. (One day earlier than last year lol)

Just some snaps from the night. My phone ran out of memory, so borrowed my friend's iPhone 6. Don't really remember the prices/names either. I've been to PappaRich a few times now, and it's generally decently priced and delicious. I've pretty much have had all the non spicy dishes here.

drinksss. my one on the right: soya pudding w/ grass jelly-$5.90

Congee+chicken-$13.90

Vegetarian noodle dish

Beef Rendeng w/ rice-$15

Pan mee soup noodles-$14

This didn't have enough mushrooms ): Egg was so soft though :)

Roti Canai w/ curry chicken-$8.90 Roti Teur Bawang w/ curry-$13.90

other stir fried noodles Char Koay Teow-$14

0.5L-$12.80+ 'artistically' placed spoons
Pannacotta w/ Fig Jam and Amaretti Biscuit, Blood Orange, Tongue Thai'd: Peanut and coconut gelato with cashew dacquoise and lime curd

We always seem to have something coconutty, and then blood orange as our staple sorbet. So yum and full of citrus flavour. I think I've pretty much have had most of the interesting Messina flavours as well (chocolate, vanilla etc is classed as non-interesting and probs not worth paying for). Love the creaminess of the pannacotta based gelato. The special I chose didn't have enough dacquoise in it or sourness form the lime, mostly coconut flavoured.

Thanks Happy Apple for the super delicious brownies!

PappaRich at Macquarie

Macquarie is starting/continuing to have everything from shopping to food. Things you used to find in the city are now also in Macquarie. From Snag and Stand, Chefs Gallery, and soon Ippudo (they turned on their lights today, which means it's opening soon), and many more different places to eat. Still getting lost in this shopping centre with it's continuous expansions.

Second time at Pappa Rich, first time was at Parra. Didn't have their roti this time, but opted for a stir fried dish, since it had chilli, it also meant that it was an excuse to try one of their many dishes. From memory, the prices at Maquarie are slightly more expensive than Parra, or maybe their prices have just increased across the board since last year.

Pappa Char Koay Teow: flat noodles w/ prawns, fish cakes, egg, bean, sprouts and chives-$13.90
Matcha Rocks-$7.50

The dish was on the spicy side for me (I can hardly eat spicy stuff), but is was a nice spicy and bearable. The dish obviously doesn't look like it does on the menu. They do give you 3 prawns as pictured, but the fish cakes were super shredded. It's actually not a massive dish for the price, nor was there a lot of toppings. It was definitely filling for one person with a drink, but more on the expensive side for something stir fried. Didn't turn the plate around to take this photo, which is kind of annoying.

The drink itself wasn't too sweet, but was expecting a bigger matcha/green tea hit which I didn't get. The red beans weren't that sweet either, but I prefer these types of drinks not overly sweet or else it feels like you're drinking sugar.

Watched Minions after dinner, and they are super cute! There is a story line, so I guess the movie was better than I expected it to be since minions can't really talk, but you still can kind of understand them.

vegetarian roti-$7.90, roti canai single-$5.50, teh tarik (iced)-$4.20

Took my mum here the next day since she hasn't had the roti from here before. Can't really see them make the roti like the other places...They said it would take around 15mins, but luckily it was lunch and they weren't super busy, so it took less than that. The single piece of roti is quite expensive considering you add around $2 for some curry sauce and a slightly bigger piece of roti. We still didn't manage to finish the sauces even with another piece of roti. Also, that red sauce was way too spicy for us, but the other curries were a nice spice level. The teh tarik was slightly on the sweeter side and not as heavy on the tea flavour. It was a super quick lunch stop from all the shopping since we were planning to go somewhere else for our second lunch of the day.

Rasa Delights

A new place in Eastwood has popped up on the Korean side, near the building with Aldi inside. I used to go Eastwood often when I was younger when I lived around there, but now I hardly go, and so many new places to eat are being opened. The last time I went to the Aldi in Eastwood, there was nothing there except Aldi.

We hardly ever eat out as a family, but since my brother finally got a job, he shouted dinner (also it was Mother's Day, and I shouted high tea earlier in the day-yep, this this post is quite delayed.)

There isn't a lot of variety in the Malaysian/Hong Kong fusion menu, and I can't say it's super cheap Asian food, but I guess they did open just only 2 months ago, so hopefully they'll add to it overtime. It was also a family friend's friend's new startup business (he actually has another day time job, but felt like opening a restaurant).

front

menu

Laksa fish balls (4pcs-my dad was too hungry hence 3 in the pic)-$3
drinks: homemade lemonade-$3.50, teh tarik (cold)-$3

I really like their laksa since it's just the right amount of spiciness for me, which means for most of you it won't be spicy at all. the lemonade was average, and I would have liked a stronger flavour in the teh tarik. Couldn't see it being 'pulled' like you do at Mamak and other similar places. I have the exact drinking jars at home.

Laksa w/ king prawns-$14.80, spring rolls-$6.80
Loved the laksa, and there were about 5-6 massive prawns in there, was expecting less. The spring rolls weren't too oily but still had a crunch.

Also ordered the Hainan chicken w/ coconut rice-$13.80, chicken wasn't too fatty and still had good flavour. The Nasi Lamek w/ Lemongrass Pork Cutlet-$13.80 was probably the most disappointing. The pork cutlet was really small and since it was deep fried, the lemongrass flavour wasn't as prominent. Last time my parents brought home the lemongrass deep fried chicken wings, they had heaps of flavour, maybe because it was smaller. They don't use MSG here, which is a plus.

Har Mee Soup-combo of egg and rice noodles in prawn based stock, thin slice of pork, prawns, egg and kang kung (asian veggies)-$14.80

This looks like an average bowl of noodles, but the stock was so full of flavour! You can definitely taste the prawn base soup in it, and has a tiny bit of spice. This was my favourite of the night. It's also interesting to have a combination of noodles in one bowl.

Egg Waffles! $3 (takeaway only)

Definitely my new go-to place for HK style egg waffles if I ever miss authentic HK ones. There are some places in Chinatown in the city, but some of them aren't as authentic. This place is definitely fresh, crunchy shell and soft on the inside. It's about the same price as HK, and it's also a bit bigger than you average HK egg waffle. Yay for fresh egg waffles closer to home!

PappaRich and Messina

went to uni to practice again today. oh, after they released the 9 page document last week about our prac exams, i finally know what OSCE means-objective structured clinical exam. yeah, i'm a bit slow at times. so glad they set out sessions to practice at the clinic, unlike last time where it was constantly full.

traffic to parra today was horrible, probs because of some nrl final or something. still hate parking at parra. like going around the car park, there was a trolley in the middle of the road! like at least push it to the side or something. luckily the car just made it around it without scratching the other parked car and w/o me getting out of the car to move the trolley. and parra parking is more cramped compared to towers.

cheat day, all day everyday. everything i ate today i'm not supposed to eat, and my skin's just going to get worse....it's a once off, so hopefully it won't be too bad...

finally got to try PappaRich. the parra restaurant is quite nice (: i think we ordered just enough. i really like using the button thing for service. there was another restaurant (well quite a few) which have that, but this restaurant was super efficient. the menus are so nicely printed. they don't have the prices on the website, and i forgot the prices as well, but i spend a bit under $20, so it wasn't as cheap as holy basil a few weeks ago, but i guess it's not too expensive. in saying that, i'm quite broke atm, hence i haven't/will try not to go to any brunches/cafes until next year. so good to see almost everyone (: get better soon Tess!

Happy Apple beat me with the photos, haha

Beef Rendang-$14.50ish and deep fried chicken skin-$6.90

the beef was ok, i've had better. first and probably last time i'll have deep fried chicken skin. in primary i would eat chicken w/ skin, high school i peeled off the skin even though we bought organic/free range/no hormone chicken, in uni i hardly ever eat chicken since i'm not supposed to...papparich has a lot of chicken dishes...heard the chicken skin was good. it is really good, but it's fat deep fried in more fat, and i felt so full afterwards from all that oil...

combination flat noodles-$14ish, crispy egg noodle w/chicken-$13.50

both were pretty big servings for the price, they were nice but not spectacular. not many non spicy dishes to choose from

teh tarik-$3.90

i always like comparing the basics. i prefer mamak's milk tea, this one isn't as strong. not that flavourful, and more ice than i would've liked

roti telur w/ chicken curry-$12.90

roti telur-vegetarian-$6.90

the curries were really nice, and i prefer this roti over Mamak. so delicious! light and fluffily (and oily), but lovely to dip into the sauces which weren't too spicy (except for the red one).

even though we were all full, we still got gelato. haven't had messina in a while (:

1L tub: cremino, tiramisu, almond and croissant, coconut and lychee-$19

because i know i would forget what's in the flavours

the cremino's salted caramel wasn't the prominent, probably because the gianduia (chocolate and hazelnut) fudge was quite sweet and overpowering. not salted enough. which reminds me, the connoisseur salted caramel hazelnut flavour isn't salted enough, so i decided to add some himalayan salt and it became really nice. here were little bits of meringue and armaretti biscuits, but i would have preferred more. the almond and croissant was really delicious with buttery almond and some sweet bits of caramel coffee. waffle cones are 50c each, but we didn't manage to finish the 2nd cone...

yay, catching and over dinner and gelato makes me happy (:
